Rotating through the upper abdomen, the animation traces the liver’s diaphragmatic (superior) surface and then transitions to the visceral (inferior) surface where the left and right lobes are separated anteriorly by the falciform ligament. As the viewpoint sweeps inferiorly, the quadrate lobe appears medial to the gallbladder fossa and anterior to the porta hepatis, while the caudate lobe is revealed posteriorly adjacent to the groove for the inferior vena cava. The round ligament (ligamentum teres hepatis) is followed within the free inferior margin of the falciform ligament toward its course to the umbilical region. Landmarks stay clear. Orientation to these external features matters in hepatobiliary surgery and cross sectional imaging because they guide you to the porta hepatis and its contents (proper hepatic artery, portal vein, and common hepatic duct) and help reconcile surface anatomy with Couinaud segments. The sequence clarifies how the falciform ligament relates to the left hepatic vein and anterior abdominal wall, a relationship that becomes clinically visible when the paraumbilical veins recanalize through the ligamentum teres in portal hypertension (caput medusae pathway).
