Description
Centered in the middle mediastinum, the male heart sits medial to both lungs, its apex pointing anteroinferiorly and to the left where it approaches the lingula of the left upper lobe. As the animation advances, the right atrium and right ventricle appear more anterior, while the left atrium lies posterior, closely related to the esophagus and the roots of the lungs at the hila. Superiorly, the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk emerge from the ventricular outflow tracts, and the superior vena cava descends on the right side toward the right atrium. Bronchi and trachea track inferiorly and posteriorly, framing the cardiopulmonary relationship from airway to myocardium. Clinical reading of chest radiographs depends on these spatial relationships, because a silhouette sign at the right heart border points toward right middle lobe disease, while loss of the left heart border implicates the lingula rather than the lower lobe.
