Description

Beginning with the diaphragmatic (superior) surface, the animation rotates the female human liver to orient the right and left lobes around the anterior falciform ligament, then continues to the visceral (inferior) surface where the fissures and impressions come into view. As the viewpoint sweeps medially, the quadrate lobe is identified on the anteroinferior aspect adjacent to the fissure for the round ligament (ligamentum teres hepatis), while the caudate lobe sits posteriorly, superior to the porta hepatis and bordered by the groove for the inferior vena cava. Peritoneal reflections are traced in sequence, emphasizing how the falciform ligament separates the lobes superficially yet does not correspond to functional segmental anatomy. Surface anatomy matters when you plan access. Surgical exposure for cholecystectomy, hepatic resection, or transplantation depends on recognizing the visceral landmarks, the porta hepatis (portal vein, proper hepatic artery, and common hepatic duct), and the posterior relationship of the caudate lobe to the inferior vena cava.
