Description
Beginning at the skin surface of the anterior thoracic wall, the animation traces the breast from the pigmented areola to the nipple, then moves posteriorly into the parenchyma where 15 to 20 lobes radiate toward the nipple in a largely radial pattern. Segment by segment, lactiferous ducts narrow into ductules that arborize into terminal ductal lobular units, with lobules embedded in fibrofatty stroma and suspended by Cooper ligaments running from dermis to deep fascia. A layered reveal clarifies how the gland sits superficial to pectoralis major, separated by the retromammary space, while the ductal network remains directed anteromedially toward the nipple. Most breast pathology starts in the terminal ductal lobular unit, and the sequence makes that architecture easier to teach than a single plate. Following the branching ducts toward the nipple helps explain why periductal mastitis and duct ectasia present with subareolar pain or discharge, and why intraductal papilloma can cause unilateral bloody nipple discharge from a single duct orifice.
