Description
Beginning in the right upper quadrant, the sequence localizes the gallbladder (vesica biliaris) tucked on the visceral (inferior) surface of the liver, inferior to the right lobe and lateral to the porta hepatis. Landmarks step in to outline the fundus projecting anteriorly toward the right 9th costal cartilage at the midclavicular line, the body seated in the gallbladder fossa, and the neck curving posteromedially into the cystic duct. As the animation progresses, the cystic duct joins the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct, with the intrahepatic biliary tree traced proximally within the liver and the extrahepatic ducts tracked distally toward the hepatoduodenal ligament. Orientation matters here. Radiologists and surgeons rely on the gallbladder silhouette and ductal confluence to interpret ultrasound, CT, MRCP, and cholangiography, and to anticipate anatomic variants that increase the risk of bile duct injury. Layer-by-layer revealing of the biliary tree clarifies spatial relationships in a way a static plate cannot, including the posterior course of the common bile duct toward the pancreatic head and the typical location of Calot triangle where the cystic artery and cystic duct are identified during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Stones, inflammation, and ductal obstruction become easier to conceptualize when you can follow bile flow from hepatic ducts through the cystic duct and into the common bile duct. Bile flow is directional.
