Description

Over the sequence, the mass enlarges and displaces adjacent cord tissue, clarifying how an intramedullary tumor such as ependymoma differs in contour and cord expansion from extramedullary lesions like schwannoma, meningioma, or a destructive vertebral chordoma encroaching on the canal. Compression is clear. Clinically, this is the anatomy behind progressive myelopathy: gait disturbance, upper motor neuron signs, and a sensory level when the cord is compromised, versus radicular pain and dermatomal deficits when a foraminal component is involved.
