Description
Radiographic visualization centers on the gallbladder (vesica biliaris) as a pear-shaped, contrast-defined reservoir tucked on the visceral (inferior) surface of the right lobe of the liver, typically in the fossa between the right hepatic lobe and the quadrate lobe. As the animation progresses, the fundus appears most anterior and inferior, the body lies more posterior and superior, and the neck tapers medially toward the porta hepatis to become the cystic duct. The cystic duct joins the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct, with the extrahepatic biliary tree traced proximally into right and left hepatic ducts and distally toward the pancreatic head. Temporal sequencing matters in an X-ray style biliary study because radiographic density changes with filling and drainage, letting you follow bile or contrast movement rather than guessing duct continuity from a single frame. Cholelithiasis and cholecystitis often declare themselves at the cystic duct and neck, while choledocholithiasis obstructs the common bile duct and produces upstream ductal dilatation, a pattern the animation can depict as progressive caliber change along the biliary tree. Watch the infundibulum region. It is a common site where an impacted stone can precipitate Mirizzi syndrome by compressing the common hepatic duct.
