Description
Running along the medial arm in anterior view, the deep lymphatic vessels accompany the paired brachial veins and the brachial artery, then continue proximally toward the axilla as they converge on the apical and central axillary node groups. Superficial muscles frame the pathway, with pectoralis major forming the anterior axillary fold, deltoid capping the shoulder laterally, and biceps brachii and the medial bicipital groove providing a landmark over the neurovascular bundle. Clavicle and humerus orient the region, and the lymphatics remain closely applied to the vascular sheaths rather than the superficial venous network. Deep lymphatic drainage of the arm matters because it tracks the same corridors used in axillary surgery, vascular access, and oncologic staging, so disruption or obstruction tends to follow predictable anatomic routes. Sentinel node mapping for melanoma or soft tissue sarcoma of the upper limb, and lymphadenopathy from infection or malignancy, often declares itself first in axillary nodes rather than along superficial channels. Expect clinically relevant cross talk: edema after axillary node dissection or radiation reflects impaired lymph return from both superficial and deep systems, and the deep vessels’ proximity to the brachial artery and veins explains why postoperative scarring can tether multiple structures at once.
