Description

Centered on the interpectoral (Rotter) lymph nodes, lymphatic channels course through the fat plane between pectoralis major anteriorly and pectoralis minor posteriorly, linking superficial mammary lymphatics with deeper axillary pathways. Mammary lobules occupy the anterior chest wall, their glandular tissue embedded in subcutaneous fat and tethered by fibrous septa consistent with Cooper ligaments as they extend from dermis toward the deep fascia. Small nodular elements along the green and blue tracks suggest lymph nodes and adjacent vascular structures running superolaterally toward the axilla. Interpectoral lymphatics matter because they form a recognized relay station in breast lymph drainage that can be involved even when the primary axillary basin is not grossly enlarged. During breast cancer staging, metastases may appear in Rotter nodes via lymphatic channels traversing the pectoral fascia, influencing sentinel lymph node mapping and axillary dissection planning. Clear depiction of the pectoralis major and minor relationship also supports teaching of the transpectoral route of spread and why deep lesions can behave differently from purely superficial glandular tumors. A small but consequential pathway. Use this artwork in surgical anatomy teaching for breast and axillary lymph node surgery, including discussions of sentinel node biopsy technique and level I to III axillary node anatomy relative to pectoralis minor. It also fits oncology texts and radiology education where readers need a mental map for correlating lymphatic drainage patterns with ultrasound or MRI findings in the retropectoral and interpectoral spaces. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
