Description
Running along the anterior thigh, the rectus femoris sits superficial to the femoral shaft and occupies the central plane of the quadriceps femoris between vastus lateralis laterally and vastus medialis medially, with the iliotibial tract further lateral in a true lateral view. Proximally, its straight head arises from the anterior inferior iliac spine and the reflected head from the superior acetabular rim, then the muscle belly courses inferiorly to blend into the quadriceps tendon. Distally, that tendon continues over the patella and into the patellar ligament to the tibial tuberosity, with the tibia medial and the fibula posterolateral in the leg. Clear landmarks. Lateral orientation matters because it clarifies how a biarticular extensor can also act as a hip flexor, and why strain patterns differ from the vasti during sprinting and kicking, when rapid eccentric loading occurs near the proximal myotendinous junction.
