Description

Arising from the dorsal venous network on the dorsum of the foot, the lateral marginal vein courses along the lateral border in close relationship to the fifth metatarsal and the lateral tarsal region before turning proximally toward the ankle. From a dorsal perspective, tributaries from the dorsal metatarsal veins converge into the dorsal venous arch, with drainage shifting laterally into the marginal channel. Proximally, the vessel tracks posterior to the lateral malleolus to continue as the small saphenous vein along the posterolateral leg. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this pathway matters because the transition from lateral marginal vein to small saphenous vein defines a common superficial access route and a common site of varicosities in the posterolateral calf. The relationship to the lateral malleolus is also practical for avoiding iatrogenic injury, since the sural nerve typically accompanies the small saphenous vein in the distal leg and can be irritated during cannulation, phlebectomy, or endovenous procedures. Venous drainage patterns here also help explain dorsal foot edema and superficial thrombophlebitis that tracks proximally toward the calf rather than medially toward the great saphenous territory. Ideal for lower-limb anatomy teaching in podiatry, physiotherapy, and medical gross anatomy labs, as well as for vascular surgery, interventional radiology, and nursing education materials on superficial venous access and complications. Publishers will also find it well suited for chapters on superficial venous anatomy, saphenous mapping, and clinical correlation with varicose vein distribution. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
