Description
Running along the posteromedial aspect of the distal humerus, the superior ulnar collateral artery arises from the brachial artery proximal to the medial epicondyle and tracks inferiorly toward the elbow. From this posterior perspective, the brachial artery is seen continuing distally to bifurcate into the radial and ulnar arteries in the cubital fossa region, with smaller muscular branches implied along the arm and forearm. Superficial venous return is represented in parallel, including a cephalic vein on the lateral side of the limb, while the arterial arcade continues into the palm and digital arteries of the hand. Relationships are read in standard anatomical position, with proximal arm superior, forearm inferior, and the ulnar side medial. Course matters at the elbow. The superior ulnar collateral artery participates in the periarticular anastomosis around the medial epicondyle, classically linking with the posterior ulnar recurrent artery behind the elbow joint and supporting collateral flow when the brachial artery is compromised or clamped. Surgeons also meet this vessel during medial approaches to the distal humerus and during ulnar nerve decompression or transposition, where posteromedial dissection near the medial intermuscular septum can risk bleeding and postoperative hematoma.
