Description
Posterior cardiac anatomy comes into focus, with the left atrium forming most of the cardiac base and receiving the right and left pulmonary veins at its superolateral margins. Inferior to the atrium, the left ventricle contributes to the diaphragmatic surface and the apex projects inferiorly and to the left, while the right atrium lies more to the right with the superior and inferior venae cavae approaching it. Along the posterior interventricular sulcus, the posterior interventricular artery (posterior descending artery) and middle cardiac vein track toward the apex, and the coronary sinus courses transversely in the posterior atrioventricular groove before entering the right atrium. Clear landmarks. This posterior perspective matters because it is the most direct way to teach the pulmonary venous inflow and the relationships that drive left atrial procedures. Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation targets myocardial sleeves around the pulmonary vein ostia, and posterior left atrial wall proximity to the esophagus frames the risk of atrioesophageal fistula during energy delivery. Surgeons also reference this surface when planning mitral valve exposure and when considering variations in coronary sinus size and position for cardiac resynchronization therapy lead placement. Use this asset in gross anatomy and cardiovascular blocks to orient students to the base of the heart, pulmonary venous return, and the coronary venous system, or in cardiology and electrophysiology teaching decks that discuss pulmonary vein isolation and left atrial anatomy. It also fits well in operative atlases and patient education materials explaining posterior cardiac access, coronary sinus cannulation, or the location of the posterior interventricular artery in right dominant circulation.
