Description

Oriented in anterior anatomical position, the talus (astragalus) is presented with the rounded caput tali centered and projecting anteriorly, where it articulates with the navicular to form the talonavicular component of the transverse tarsal joint. The collum tali narrows posterior to the head, leading into the corpus tali, while the medial malleolar facet sits medially and the lateral malleolar facet lies more laterally for congruence with the tibia and fibula at the ankle mortise. Superiorly, the trochlea tali forms the domed articular surface for the tibial plafond, and inferiorly the posterior calcaneal articular facet begins to sweep toward the subtalar joint. Clinically, an anterior view helps you teach how the talar head is positioned to accept the navicular during plantarflexion and how that relationship shifts with hindfoot inversion and eversion through the subtalar and talonavicular joints.
