Oriented from an anterior standpoint, the female temporal region is defined by the lateral orbital rim and frontozygomatic suture anteriorly, the zygomatic arch inferiorly, and the squamous part of the temporal bone posteriorly, with the temporal fossa occupying the shallow depression superior to the zygoma. Superficial layers place skin and subcutaneous tissue over the temporoparietal fascia, where the superficial temporal artery and vein ascend just anterior to the auricle and divide into frontal and parietal branches as they course superiorly. Deep to the temporal fascia, the temporalis muscle fans out from the temporal lines toward its tendon, which passes medial to the zygomatic arch to insert on the coronoid process of the mandible. Spatially, the orbit sits anteromedial to the temporal fossa, and the zygomatic bone forms the bony bridge between them. Clear bony landmarks. Clinically, this anterior relation to the orbit makes the temporal region a high-stakes corridor for facial and oculoplastic work, where dissection in the wrong plane can injure the temporal branch of the facial nerve as it traverses the temporoparietal fascia toward the lateral brow. Palpation and procedural planning often reference the superficial temporal artery, a common site for pulse examination and the target for temporal artery biopsy in suspected giant cell arteritis, performed to prevent irreversible ischemic optic neuropathy and vision loss. The proximity of the pterion to the anterior temporal squama also matters in head trauma, since fractures here can lacerate the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery deep to the bone.
