Description
Angled between a palmar and radial-lateral perspective, the male hand and distal forearm are rendered with the phalanges, metacarpals, and carpal bones deep to a blue venous network that spans the digits, dorsum, and palm. Superficial digital veins converge into a dorsal venous network over the metacarpals and continue proximally as the cephalic vein on the radial side and the basilic vein on the ulnar side, while palmar venules drain toward the superficial palmar venous arch with deeper channels accompanying the metacarpals. Proximal to the wrist, venous tributaries course superficially over the radius and ulna, with perforating connections linking superficial vessels to paired deep veins that track the radial and ulnar arteries. Surface anatomy matters here. The dorsal hand veins are frequent targets for peripheral IV cannulation, yet their mobility over the metacarpals and proximity to superficial branches of the radial nerve along the dorsoradial wrist can complicate access and contribute to painful neuropraxia if the cannula is placed too laterally. Palmar venous arches also help explain why deep lacerations in the thenar or hypothenar regions can bleed briskly and why hemostasis may require attention to both superficial and deep venous pathways, not just the visible dorsal pattern.
