Description

Prominently centered within the male thoracic cage, the ascending aorta rises from the left ventricle, curves superiorly and posteriorly as the aortic arch, then continues inferiorly along the left side of the vertebral column as the descending thoracic aorta. From the aortic root, the right and left coronary arteries course in the atrioventricular and interventricular grooves across the anterior cardiac surface. Intercostal arteries branch segmentally from the thoracic aorta, running laterally within each intercostal space along the inferior margin of the ribs, deep to the costal cartilages and sternum anteriorly. Small arteriolar branches form a dense peripheral network. Spatially, this arrangement makes the illustration ideal for teaching how the thorax distributes systemic flow: large elastic arteries centrally, muscular segmental branches peripherally.
