Description
Anterior abdominal viscera are presented in a frontal sectional view with the rib cage and vertebral column ghosted for orientation. The stomach lies anterior to the pancreas, while the duodenum curves in a C loop around the pancreatic head on the right side of the upper abdomen, continuing inferiorly toward the jejunum. Superior and slightly lateral to the pancreatic head, the gallbladder rests on the undersurface of the liver, its cystic duct joining the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct that descends posterior to the first part of the duodenum to reach the second part. Ductwork is emphasized. That ductal geography matters in daily practice. A gallstone lodged at the ampulla of Vater can obstruct both the common bile duct and the main pancreatic duct, producing gallstone pancreatitis with jaundice and a dilated biliary tree, and this illustration makes the shared outflow into the duodenum easy to teach. The close posterior relationship of the pancreatic head to the distal common bile duct also explains why a head of pancreas carcinoma often presents with painless obstructive jaundice. Spatial clarity helps.
