Description
Anterior head anatomy is rendered with a semi-transparent skull so the cranial nerve trunks and their extracranial branches remain readable against the facial skeleton. Dominating the field, the trigeminal nerve (CN V) radiates from the trigeminal (Gasserian) ganglion into the ophthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2), and mandibular (V3) divisions, then fans across the orbit, midface, and lower face in predictable territories. The facial nerve (CN VII) courses from the stylomastoid foramen into the parotid region, where its temporofacial and cervicofacial divisions form the parotid plexus and distribute superiorly toward the temporal region and inferiorly toward the mandible and neck. Posterior to the mandible and inferior to the skull base, upper cervical nerves likely contribute to the superficial cervical plexus, with cutaneous branches tracking along the sternocleidomastoid and toward the auricle and occiput. Transparent bone plus bright neural pathways makes dermatomes and motor maps easier to teach as three-dimensional patterns rather than isolated labels. Sensory referral and facial pain evaluation hinge on the CN V divisions, and this view supports clinical localization in trigeminal neuralgia (often V2 or V3) and in iatrogenic injury risk during dental blocks, maxillofacial fracture repair, and endoscopic sinus surgery near the infraorbital and supraorbital nerves. CN VII branching within the parotid gland is a surgical landmine. Appreciating how the temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical branches cross the mandibular ramus and facial vessels helps when discussing parotidectomy, facelift incisions, and patterns of Bell palsy.
