Description
Running along the radial side of the antebrachium, the lateral border is defined superficially by the contour of the radius from the lateral epicondyle region proximally to the radial styloid distally, with the brachioradialis forming much of the visible ridge in the proximal and middle thirds. Anterior to this border, the extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis and the mobile wad create a gentle anterolateral convexity, while posteriorly the extensor compartment flattens toward the dorsum. Near the distal forearm, the line of the border approaches the anatomical snuffbox region, where the tendons of abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis lie anterolateral to extensor pollicis longus, and the superficial branch of the radial nerve becomes more cutaneous. The radial side is clearly localized. Clinically, accurate identification of the lateral forearm border helps orient surface anatomy for radial artery cannulation at the wrist and for palpation of the radial pulse as it courses deep to the brachioradialis tendon before turning dorsally. That same distal radial corridor matters when teaching de Quervain tenosynovitis, where pain localizes over the first dorsal compartment just lateral to the radial styloid, and when avoiding iatrogenic injury to the superficial radial nerve during dorsal approaches and wrist arthroscopy portal placement. Anatomy instructors can use this rendering in upper-limb surface anatomy labs, musculoskeletal examination teaching, and procedural skills modules that pair palpation with the underlying radius, brachioradialis, and radial neurovascular landmarks. Medical publishers will also find it suitable for patient-facing explanations of radial-sided wrist pain and for perioperative education that needs an anatomically grounded depiction of the lateral border on a Black female model.
