Description
Rendered in lateral profile, the mandible is isolated in blue against the cranial vault and upper face, allowing quick identification of the body, ramus, angle (gonion), coronoid process, and condylar process forming the temporomandibular joint. Superiorly, the mandibular alveolar process aligns with the maxilla and the dental arch, while the condyle sits posterior to the zygomatic arch at the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone. Posterior and inferior to the skull base, the cervical spine is included with the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) supporting the occiput and continuing caudally into the lower cervical vertebrae. Cranial sutures, including the coronal and lambdoid sutures, remain legible landmarks around the frontal, parietal, and occipital bones. A lateral skull with the mandible emphasized is the working view for correlating jaw mechanics with the cranio-cervical junction, where posture and mandibular position are often discussed in temporomandibular disorders and orthodontic planning. Fracture patterns also read well here: condylar neck injuries, angle fractures near the third molar region, and body fractures along the parasymphysis each displace in characteristic directions based on masseter, temporalis, and suprahyoid pull. It matters in airway management too, since mandibular hypoplasia or posterior mandibular positioning can narrow the oropharyngeal space and complicate mask ventilation or laryngoscopy. Use this plate in head and neck anatomy courses, dental and maxillofacial teaching files, and surgical consent materials that need clear orientation of the mandible relative to the maxilla and cervical spine. It also fits radiology primers that pair lateral skull radiographs or cephalometric analysis with bony landmarks. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
