Description
Posterior musculature of an adult female is rendered with the integument partially translucent so the superficial and selected deep layers read clearly. Across the upper back, the trapezius spans from the nuchal region and thoracic spinous processes to the lateral clavicle and acromion, with the deltoid capping the lateral shoulder and the triceps brachii running along the posterior arm toward the olecranon. Inferiorly, latissimus dorsi sweeps superolaterally from the thoracolumbar fascia to the proximal humerus, while gluteus maximus dominates the posterolateral hip overlying the gluteus medius, and the hamstring tendons descend from the ischial tuberosity toward the posterior knee. Scapulothoracic mechanics are easiest to teach from the back, because you can track how trapezius and latissimus dorsi relate to the medial border and inferior angle of the scapula and how their lines of pull oppose or couple during overhead reaching. That relationship is where common patterns of shoulder pain live, including scapular dyskinesis and secondary impingement when trapezius timing or serratus anterior recruitment is altered, even though serratus slips are only partially appreciated from this angle. Tendon direction and fascial continuity matter. They explain force transfer into the thoracolumbar fascia and why lumbar strain often coexists with hip abductor weakness. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and kinesiology courses to anchor palpation labs (scapular spine, iliac crest, posterior axillary fold), and in sports medicine or physical therapy materials to illustrate posterior chain training and clinical examination landmarks. It also fits orthopaedic and plastic surgery publishing when discussing posterior approaches, flap planning around latissimus dorsi, or safe intramuscular injection zones in the gluteal region.
