Description
A 3D model of articular cartilage showing its layered organization from the joint surface to the underlying bone. The superficial zone has flattened chondrocytes and densely packed collagen parallel to the surface. The middle zone has rounded cells and oblique fibers. The deep zone has columnar cell arrangement and perpendicular fibers. The tidemark separates uncalcified from calcified cartilage. Articular cartilage provides a smooth, low-friction surface for joint movement and distributes loads across the subchondral bone. It has no blood supply, relying on diffusion from synovial fluid, which limits its capacity to heal after injury. Articular cartilage anatomy is studied in orthopedics, rheumatology, and sports medicine. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
