Description
A 3D model of a basophil, the rarest circulating granulocyte. The cell has a bilobed or S-shaped nucleus often obscured by large, dark-staining (metachromatic) granules that fill the cytoplasm. These granules contain histamine, heparin, and other mediators released during allergic reactions. Basophils participate in allergic inflammation and parasitic infections. IgE antibodies bound to their surface trigger degranulation when they encounter their specific allergen, releasing histamine and other mediators that cause allergic symptoms. They share functional overlap with tissue mast cells. Basophil anatomy is taught in immunology and allergy education. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
