Description

A coronal section through the brain, cut perpendicular to the long axis to expose the cerebral cortex, white matter, basal ganglia, and lateral ventricles. The caudate nucleus and putamen flank the internal capsule, and the thalamus sits at the center. The corpus callosum bridges the two hemispheres above the ventricles. Coronal brain sections show the layered organization from cortex through white matter to deep gray matter structures. The internal capsule, containing the corticospinal and thalamocortical tracts, passes between the basal ganglia in a location where small strokes can cause significant motor deficits.
