Description

A 3D model of the brain with the frontal and temporal opercula retracted to expose the insular cortex. The insula is normally hidden deep within the lateral (Sylvian) fissure, covered by the overlapping lips of the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes. Retracting these opercula reveals the five insular gyri. The insula processes interoceptive awareness, taste, visceral sensation, and emotional context. It plays a role in pain perception, addiction, and autonomic regulation. Insular cortex tumors and strokes produce symptoms that overlap multiple functional domains. The exposed insula model supports neuroanatomy teaching where this hidden lobe needs to be visualized. Medical advisory board reviewed. Clean geometry for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
