Description
A 3D model of a circumvallate papilla, one of the large dome-shaped taste papillae located in a V-formation at the back of the tongue. The papilla sits within a circular trench (vallum), and taste buds line the walls of the trench. Von Ebner's glands drain into the trench, washing tastants across the taste buds. Humans have 7 to 12 circumvallate papillae, each containing hundreds of taste buds that detect bitter compounds, which evolutionarily served as a warning against toxins. The papillae are large enough to be visible to the naked eye as rounded bumps on the posterior tongue. Circumvallate papilla anatomy is studied in oral biology, taste physiology, and histology courses. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
