Description
A 3D model of the macula, the sensory organ in the utricle and saccule that detects linear acceleration and head position. Hair cells project their stereocilia into an overlying otolithic membrane weighted with calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia). Gravity or acceleration shifts the membrane, bending the stereocilia. The maculae provide the sense of linear acceleration and head tilt. The utricular macula is oriented horizontally (detecting forward/backward and side-to-side motion), while the saccular macula is vertical (detecting up/down motion). Displaced otoconia cause benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Macula anatomy is taught in audiology and vestibular physiology courses. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
