Description

A 3D model of an intervertebral disc showing its two main components. The central nucleus pulposus is a gelatinous, water-rich cushion. The surrounding annulus fibrosus consists of concentric layers of fibrocartilage with alternating fiber angles. Cartilage endplates connect the disc to the adjacent vertebral bodies. The disc absorbs compressive loads on the spine while allowing limited motion between vertebrae. With aging, the nucleus loses water content and the annulus develops cracks, predisposing to disc degeneration and herniation. Intervertebral disc anatomy is studied in orthopedics, neurosurgery, and pain medicine. Medical advisory board reviewed. Clean geometry for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
