Description
A cross section of a lymph node, cut to reveal the internal architecture. The cortex contains follicles with germinal centers where B lymphocytes proliferate, and the paracortex houses T lymphocytes. The medulla contains medullary cords and sinuses. Afferent lymphatic vessels enter through the capsule, and a single efferent vessel exits at the hilum. Lymph nodes filter lymph and serve as sites for immune surveillance and activation. Antigens arriving via afferent lymph are presented to lymphocytes, triggering adaptive immune responses. Nodes enlarge during infection as lymphocytes proliferate, and they are the first site of metastatic spread for many cancers. Lymph node anatomy is studied in immunology, pathology, and oncology.
