Description

A 3D model of a macrophage, a large phagocytic cell of the innate immune system. The cell shows an irregular shape with membrane extensions (pseudopods) used for engulfing pathogens and debris. Lysosomes and phagosomes are visible in the cytoplasm where ingested material is digested. Macrophages are professional phagocytes derived from circulating monocytes. They patrol tissues, engulf pathogens and dead cells, present antigens to T cells, and secrete cytokines that coordinate the inflammatory response. Tissue-resident macrophages have specialized names: Kupffer cells in the liver, microglia in the brain, alveolar macrophages in the lung. Macrophage anatomy is taught in immunology and pathology courses. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
