Description
An anterior cross section of the male colon, cut to expose the internal wall layers and mucosal surface. The section reveals the mucosa with its columnar epithelium, the submucosa, the circular and longitudinal muscle layers of the muscularis externa, and the outer serosa. Haustra are visible as segmental pouches along the cut surface. The colonic mucosa lacks the villi found in the small intestine, presenting instead a flat surface with numerous crypts (of Lieberkühn) that produce mucus for stool passage. The taenia coli run as three bands of concentrated longitudinal muscle along the outer wall. Colon wall anatomy is taught in histology and surgical pathology. Understanding the layers matters for cancer staging, where depth of invasion through the wall determines the T classification. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
