Male Colon Sigmoidectomy

Description

A 3D model of the male colon showing a sigmoidectomy, the surgical removal of the sigmoid colon. The sigmoid mesentery is divided, and the descending colon is anastomosed to the upper rectum. The resected sigmoid segment and the resulting anastomosis are modeled. Sigmoidectomy is commonly performed for sigmoid cancer, complicated diverticular disease, and sigmoid volvulus. The sigmoid colon's redundancy and its own mesentery make it amenable to resection with primary anastomosis in most cases.
