Description

A cross section of the male duodenum, cut to expose the internal mucosal surface with its characteristic villi and Brunner's glands in the submucosa. The circular folds (plicae circulares) project into the lumen, increasing the absorptive surface area. The four wall layers, mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa, are visible at the cut edge. The duodenum is unique among small intestinal segments for its Brunner's glands, which secrete alkaline mucus to neutralize the acidic chyme arriving from the stomach. The major and minor duodenal papillae mark where bile and pancreatic secretions enter. Duodenal anatomy is studied in gastroenterology, histology, and surgical education.
