Description
A cross section through the adult male heart oriented to expose the aortic root and left ventricular outflow tract. The cut follows a plane that opens the aortic valve from above, revealing the three semilunar cusps (left coronary, right coronary, and non-coronary) and the sinuses of Valsalva behind each cusp. The coronary artery ostia are visible at the aortic root, showing where the left and right coronary arteries originate. Below the valve, the section traces the outflow tract through the muscular and membranous portions of the interventricular septum. The relationship between the aortic and mitral valves, which share a fibrous continuity, is demonstrated in this cut.
