Description

An anterior cross section of the male kidney, cut to expose the internal architecture. The renal cortex forms the outer zone, and the medullary pyramids point inward toward the renal pelvis. The minor and major calyces collect urine from the pyramids and funnel it into the renal pelvis, which narrows into the ureter at the ureteropelvic junction. The cortex contains the glomeruli and proximal/distal convoluted tubules, while the medulla holds the loops of Henle and collecting ducts. The columns of Bertin (renal columns) extend cortical tissue between the pyramids. Kidney cross sections are standard teaching models in nephrology, histology, and surgical anatomy. The internal zonal organization explains how the kidney concentrates urine and how disease affects different regions. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
