Description

A 3D model of the male kidney affected by polycystic kidney disease (PKD). The kidney surface is studded with cysts of varying sizes, distorting the normal renal contour and dramatically enlarging the organ. The cysts replace functioning nephrons, progressively destroying the cortex and medulla. Autosomal dominant PKD is one of the most common inherited kidney diseases, affecting roughly 1 in 1,000 people. Cysts grow throughout life, compressing the surrounding parenchyma and leading to hypertension, pain, hematuria, and eventual renal failure. The kidneys can reach several times their normal size.
