Description

An anterior cross section of the male lung showing the changes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The parenchyma shows emphysematous destruction with enlarged airspaces where alveolar walls have broken down. The bronchial walls appear thickened from chronic inflammation, and mucus plugging may be visible in the airways. COPD encompasses emphysema and chronic bronchitis, almost always caused by smoking. Emphysema destroys the alveolar walls, reducing the gas exchange surface and creating the hyperinflated, air-trapped lungs seen on imaging. Chronic bronchitis thickens the airway walls and increases mucus production. The model supports pulmonology education, patient communication about smoking cessation, and pathology teaching.
