Description

An anterior cross section of the male lung showing the pathological changes of pulmonary tuberculosis. Tuberculous cavities are visible in the upper lobe, where caseous necrosis has liquefied and been partially expectorated, leaving walled-off cavitary lesions. Surrounding parenchyma shows granulomatous inflammation. Pulmonary TB typically affects the upper lobes, where higher oxygen tension favors mycobacterial growth. Cavitation occurs in post-primary (reactivation) disease and is the hallmark of infectious tuberculosis, as the cavities contain large numbers of bacilli that can be aerosolized during coughing.
