Description

A cross section of the male pancreas showing a mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN). The lesion appears as a thick-walled, septated cystic mass within the pancreatic parenchyma. MCNs typically occur in the body or tail and have a distinct ovarian-type stroma in their wall. Mucinous cystic neoplasms carry malignant potential and are considered premalignant lesions. They produce mucin and can progress from low-grade dysplasia through high-grade dysplasia to invasive carcinoma. Surgical resection is recommended for all MCNs due to this risk.
