Description
A cross section of the male pancreas containing a neuroendocrine tumor (PNET). The tumor appears as a well-circumscribed, hypervascular mass within the pancreatic parenchyma, distinguishable from the surrounding acinar tissue by its different density and borders. Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors arise from the islet cells and can be functional (producing hormones like insulin or gastrin) or non-functional. They represent about 2 to 5 percent of pancreatic neoplasms and tend to be less aggressive than pancreatic adenocarcinoma, though behavior varies with grade.
