Description

An isolated 3D model of the male small intestine, following its three segments from the duodenal C-loop through the jejunum and into the ileum. The jejunal walls are thicker and more vascular than the ileal walls, reflecting their greater absorptive activity. The mesentery suspends the jejunum and ileum, carrying blood supply from the superior mesenteric artery. The small intestine is the primary site of nutrient absorption. The enormous surface area created by circular folds, villi, and microvilli gives the small bowel a combined absorptive surface that far exceeds the body's skin area. The ileum terminates at the ileocecal junction. Small intestinal anatomy is central to gastroenterology, nutritional science, and abdominal surgery.
