Male Stomach Anterior Section Diverticulum

An anterior cross section of the male stomach showing a diverticulum, an outpouching of the gastric wall. Gastric diverticula are rare, occurring in fewer than 0.5 percent of upper GI studies. They are most commonly found in the posterior wall of the fundus, near the gastroesophageal junction. Most gastric diverticula are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on endoscopy or imaging. Occasionally they can cause vague epigastric discomfort, nausea, or mimic the pain of peptic ulcer disease. Complications are uncommon but include bleeding and, rarely, perforation.
