Description

An anterior cross section of the male stomach and distal esophagus showing esophagitis. The esophageal mucosa appears erythematous and edematous, with superficial erosions in the squamous epithelium. The inflammation is concentrated in the distal esophagus where acid exposure is greatest. Esophagitis is most commonly caused by gastroesophageal reflux, where gastric acid repeatedly contacts the esophageal lining. Other causes include eosinophilic esophagitis, infections, radiation, and pill-induced injury. Chronic reflux esophagitis can lead to Barrett's metaplasia. The model supports gastroenterology education and patient communication about reflux disease. Reviewed by a medical advisory board. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
