Description

An anterior cross section of the male stomach showing a hiatal hernia, where the gastric fundus herniates upward through the diaphragmatic hiatus into the thoracic cavity. The gastroesophageal junction may be displaced above the diaphragm (sliding hernia) or the fundus may roll alongside a normally positioned GEJ (paraesophageal hernia). Hiatal hernias are common, found in up to 60 percent of people over 60. Sliding hernias predispose to gastroesophageal reflux by disrupting the anti-reflux mechanisms at the GEJ. Paraesophageal hernias carry a risk of gastric volvulus and incarceration. The model supports gastroenterology education, surgical anatomy teaching, and patient counseling. Reviewed by a medical advisory board. Clean geometry for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
