Description
An anterior cross section of the male stomach and distal esophagus showing the anatomy of gastroesophageal reflux. Gastric acid refluxes upward through a weakened lower esophageal sphincter, contacting the squamous epithelium of the esophagus. The distal esophageal mucosa shows the inflammatory changes of reflux esophagitis. GERD affects a significant portion of the adult population.
