Description
A 3D model showing the myelin sheath wrapping a nerve axon. Schwann cells (peripheral) or oligodendrocytes (central) wrap multiple layers of membrane around the axon, forming the myelin. Nodes of Ranvier are gaps between adjacent myelin segments where the axon membrane is exposed. Myelin insulates axons and enables saltatory conduction, where action potentials jump between nodes. This dramatically increases conduction velocity and reduces energy expenditure. Demyelinating diseases like multiple sclerosis impair nerve function. Myelin anatomy is taught in neuroanatomy and neurology courses. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
