Description
A cross section of the optic nerve, cut to reveal the internal arrangement of retinal ganglion cell axon bundles. The nerve fibers are organized into fascicles separated by connective tissue septa, and the central retinal artery and vein run through the center of the nerve. The optic nerve carries approximately 1.2 million axons from the retinal ganglion cells to the brain. The meningeal sheaths (dura, arachnoid, and pia) wrap the nerve, and the subarachnoid space around it is continuous with the intracranial cerebrospinal fluid space, which is why raised intracranial pressure can cause papilledema. The model supports neuro-ophthalmology education, neuroanatomy teaching, and clinical training. Reviewed by a medical advisory board. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
