Description
A 3D model of the organ of Corti, the sensory epithelium of the cochlea. Inner and outer hair cells sit on the basilar membrane, with their stereocilia projecting upward. The tectorial membrane overlies the hair cells. Supporting cells (Deiters' cells, pillar cells) provide structural framework. The organ of Corti converts sound vibrations into nerve impulses. Sound waves cause the basilar membrane to vibrate, bending the hair cell stereocilia against the tectorial membrane. This mechanical deflection opens ion channels and generates electrical signals. Organ of Corti anatomy is taught in audiology and neuroanatomy courses. Medical advisory board reviewed. Clean geometry for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
