Description
A cross section of the rectum and anal canal, cut to expose the internal wall layers, sphincter complex, and mucosal surface. The internal anal sphincter (smooth muscle) and external anal sphincter (skeletal muscle) surround the anal canal. The dentate line marks the junction between the upper columnar epithelium and lower squamous epithelium. The rectal wall contains the mucosa, submucosa, and muscular layers without a complete serosal covering. The levator ani muscle of the pelvic floor surrounds the anorectal junction, creating the puborectalis sling that maintains the anorectal angle and contributes to continence. Rectal anatomy is central to colorectal surgery, gastroenterology, and pelvic floor medicine. Medical advisory board reviewed. Clean geometry for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
